National Drugs Awareness Week

Statement by Cameron Dugmore, Provincial Minister of Education in the Western Cape

Western Cape MEC for Education Cameron Dugmore has urged schools to participate in various activities this week to raise awareness on the dangers of drug abuse as part of International Drug Awareness Week 21 - 28 June, as declared by the United Nations.

As part of the government's fight against substance abuse and specifically the war on Methamphetamine, commonly known as "tik" or "Tuk-Tuk", Minister Dugmore will be visiting Mitchell's Plain schools on Thursday 24 June, with Safety and Security Minister Charles Nqakula and his provincial counterpart Leonard Ramatlakane. The community and schools in the Portlands area will be staging a march and public demonstration against drugs.

Said Minister Dugmore: "The government is extremely concerned at the alarming increase in the drug "tik" among pupils. Learners and parents who wish to seek advice, can call 0800 45 46 47.

"I have asked schools to dedicate at least one hour in this week to educate learners about the dangers of drugs.

"We have sent to schools an information brochure and learning programmes to be included in Life Orientation learning areas. We welcome the publication of a drugs chart, to be issued by the Cape Argus this week, and will attempt to distribute it widely among schools to be used in classrooms.

"Drug abuse is a social problem and should be addressed through a holistic, integrated approach, where all spheres of government, NGO's, community organisations and faith-based organisations play an active role.

"Like the youth of 1976, let us unite in the struggle against gangsterism and drugs. Let us transform and build a society which we all can be proud of."
