W Cape gymnasts excel in world competition

Two young gymnasts from the Western Cape have excelled at the Spieth-Sopiega Cup gymnastics competition that took place in Port Alegro, Brazil, from 8-11 April 2004.

Simone Snyders of Lantana Primary, Mitchell's Plain (11 years), and Celeste Visagie of Luckhoff High School, Stellenbosch (15 years), represented South Africa at the competition.

Simone won the gold medal in the pre-junior section in her first international competition, while Celeste won the silver medal in the senior section.

Visagie came first at the recent trials for team selection. She has already represented South Africa on numerous occasions.

The two gymnasts are protégés of the Women’s High Performance Artistic Gymnastics Organisation, who began identifying young gymnastic talent in disadvantaged communities in 1996.
