In 2002, the WCED recognises schools that have achieved outstanding results in two categories:
In both categories of awards, consistency of performance while maintaining or increasing Grade 12 enrolment levels have been taken into consideration when identifying recipients. In order to provide statistically relevant comparisons, only schools which have maintained a minimum Grade 12 enrolment of 20 or more full time learners in each of the years under review have been included. In addition, the WCED recognises special Superintendent-General Awards for highly meritorious performance in a category not mentioned above. Category 1: Academic Excellence In the category of academic excellence we have two sub-categories: excellence in academic achievement on a set of given criteria and academic achievement in the context in which schools operate. Category 1a: Excellence on set of given criteria The first awards go to all schools in the province which have achieved Excellence in Academic results over the three years 2000 to 2002 on a set of given criteria. These criteria are In each of the relevant years schools have achieved the following:
The schools which earn this award are, in alphabetical order:
Category 1b: Excellence of outcomes within the context in which the school operates In this category awards are made to ten schools where the academic performance over the three years 2000 to 2002 illustrates consistently meritorious outcomes relative to the contexts within which the respective schools operate. It is obvious in a country like South Africa that schools operate in different contexts and with extremely different resource bases. When learners from these very different situations write the same examinations – the Senior Certificate exams - we are clearly not comparing apples with apples. In this situation the concept of added value or the extent to which schools add value to the life chances of learners is now widely recognised. For this reason we are pleased to announce the names of ten schools which have added value or achieved Excellence in Academic Outcomes over the past three years in the contexts in which they operate. The schools which earn this award are, in alphabetical order, the following:
Category 2: Improvement in results In the second category of schools we celebrate improvement in the senior certificate results over three years. Again there are two sub-categories. Category 2a: Improvement in Matriculation Endorsement rate Awards are made to those TEN schools where the matriculation endorsement rate has consistently shown the greatest improvement over the three year period 2000 to 2002, while enrolment levels of full time learners in Grade 12 was maintained or increased. The schools which earn this award are, in alphabetical order, the following:
Category 2b: Improvement in Senior Certificate pass rate In the second improvement category we acknowledge improvement in the Senior Certificate pass rate. Awards are made to those TEN schools where the Senior Certificate pass rate has consistently shown the greatest improvement over the three year period 2000 to 2002 while maintaining or increasing enrolment levels of full-time learners in Grade 12. The schools which earn this award are, in alphabetical order, the following:
This is a school which caters exclusively for learning disabled children, yet in 2002 it has for the first time in the period under review had candidates who have achieved the Senior Certificate with matriculation endorsement.
This small rural school, though situated in a depressed area, has increased its pass rate in the Senior Certificate Examinations by 28% during the period under review.
Schools are entitled to win only one award on the strength of their 2002 senior certificate results. It is particularly noteworthy, however, that among the award winning schools there are twelve which achieved the relevant criteria in more than one category. They are:
