Statement by André Gaum, Western Cape Education Minister

I was deeply saddened to hear of Monique Valentine's death.

The Western Cape Education Department (WCED) was informed this morning (Thursday, 5 September 2002) that Monique died at 16h30 on Wednesday, due to complications.

My Department and I extend our heartfelt condolences to the parents, family and friends of Monique.I will be visiting Monique's parents this afternoon to personally extend my condolences to them.

This tragic loss of life should serve as a reminder that criminals and criminal activities are never acceptable and that every effort must be made to put a stop to the senseless killing of innocent victims.
