1. A large number of permanently employed teachers in the Western Cape Education Department (WCED) are under qualified in terms of the minimum professional qualification required for registration with the South African Council for Educators.
2. The National Professional Diploma In Education (NPDE) provides teachers whose qualifications are at Relative Education Qualification Value (REQV) 12 or below with an REQV 13 qualification, which is the minimum requirement. The normal duration of this diploma course is two years of part-time study.
3. The diploma course will be offered by the University of the Western Cape and the Cape Peninsula University of Technology
4. Under-qualified teachers currently classified as REQV 11 and 12 are invited to apply for a bursary in order to study for the NPDE. A total of 60 students will be accommodated in 2007 and will be selected as follows:
20 Foundation Phase teachers  
20 Intermediate Phase teachers  
20 Senior Phase teachers (Grade 7 only)

N.B. Where contact sessions are arranged for teachers from the rural EMDC districts, these teachers will have to pay their travelling and accommodation expenses.

5. Courses will begin in early April 2007.
6. Teachers who wish to apply for a bursary must complete the attached application form. Legible photocopies of the form are acceptable.
