1. The Department of Basic Education (DBE) issued Circular S13 of 2015 regarding the incremental implementation of the latest Further Education and Training (FET) literature from 2016 to 2018.
2. This Circular requires that literature for Grade 12 should be implemented in 2017 in line with the attached national FET literature catalogue.
3. As stipulated in DBE Circular S13 of 2015, the status quo remains for the prescribed Grade 12 poems for all official Home Languages, First Additional Languages as well as short stories for official First Additional Languages in schools for the National Senior Certificate.
4. Schools are required to order FET literature for Grade 12 for 2017 in accordance with the guidelines provided in paragraph 5 below.
5. Schools must adhere to the following CAPS requirements when ordering literature books:
For Home Language: one Novel and one Drama. For African languages, the Novel can be substituted with Folklore. If additional copies of the current poetry anthology are required, schools should order these.

For First Additional Language: any two of the genres: Novel, Poetry, Drama and Short Stories. If schools choose Poetry or Short Stories then any additional books should please be ordered as well.

For Second Additional Language: any one of the genres: Novel, Poetry, Drama and Short Stories.

6. In some instances only one title is available for a particular genre, which implies that the school does not have a choice and will have to select the available title.
7. In the following cases there are no literature options provided:
Afrikaans Home Language: No Drama options
Sesotho First Additional Language: No Drama and Novel options
Sesotho Second Additional Language: No genre options
Setswana Home Language: No Drama options

Schools are expected to use their existing literature titles for the above mentioned genres to fill the gaps. Extracts from the previous FET literature catalogue are provided below the attached latest FET literature catalogue to assist schools in identifying which current literature titles may be used to fill the gaps.

8. The WCED will bear the cost of newly prescribed novels and dramas. Additional orders of existing poetry anthologies and short stories will be for the account of the school.
9. Schools should complete the attached ordering template in respect of the required number of FET literature books.

The number of books that will be required per selected genre must be indicated.

The completed template must be emailed to Shameez.Gurah@westerncape.gov.za by Friday, 29 July 2016.

10. Kindly bring the contents of this circular to the attention of all concerned.
