WCED call to action in support of vaccine roll-out

20 May 2021

Phase 2 of South Africa’s COVID-19 vaccination rollout kicked off this week and while it is aimed at people who are 60 years and older, younger people are urged to help those who are eligible to register.

The Western Cape Education Department (WCED) has over 5 900 educators and institution and office-based staff who are over the age of 60.

The WCED has asked schools, Unions, Governing Body Associations, Principal Associations, to all please ensure that they communicate to their members and staff how they can register.

In a letter to staff, Head of Education, Brent Walters, said while teachers and staff members under 60 years are not included in this phase, they might have family members that may fall within this category and will be future recipients of the vaccine. “We must use this time now to do our part in ensuring that we are prepared, as far as possible, and ensure that our staff register for the vaccine, which will ultimately contribute towards making them and their school spaces safe.”

Residents are reminded that vaccines are safe, they have been rigorously tested, and they are proven to provide excellent protection against serious COVID-19 illness and death.

All residents who are eligible under this second phase are encouraged to register as soon as possible.

To register, please visit www.westerncape.gov.za and click on the link, or dial *134*832# and follow the prompts (FREE on all South African Networks), or Whatsapp the word REGISTER to 0600 123456.
