Learners show off their word skills at Provincial Spelling Bee

5 September 2019

Thousands of Grade 4 - 6 learners were vying for the Spelling Bee top spot at the Western Cape Provincial Finals on 31 August 2019 at The Academia, Islamia College in Lansdowne.

The Provincial Spelling Bee champion title went to Bayyinah Manjoo from Star College in Metro Central Education District with Jamiel Gierdien from Fairview Primary School in Metro South Education District as the first runner up and Fatima Ismail of Boston Primary School in Metro North Education District as the second runner up. Bayyinah Manjoo was also a winner during the 2018 Spelling Bee Provincial Finals.

The Spelling Bee Championship is aimed at improving learners' performance in Languages, and serves as a solid foundation for improved reading and writing by strengthening vocabulary development.

The Competition kicks off during the first term of the school year when schools are invited by Districts Spelling Bee Coordinators to participate. Learners take part in Circuit Spelling Bees and the top performers proceed to the District and Provincial Championships respectively.

The Western Cape Provincial Team will now compete in the National Championship.

The team will be led by Ms Portia Smit (Senior Curriculum Planner for Languages) who is the Provincial Spelling Bee Coordinator, an appointed Chaperone and the top three Spellers.

The Championship is set to take place at UNISA in Pretoria on Saturday, 21 September 2019.
