Wynberg Girls’ High School Principal, Dr Jennifer Wallace, was awarded her PhD by the University of Cape Town in December.
Her thesis was titled The Gift of a Scholarship: The reflective accounts of scholarship recipients attending elite secondary schools in post-apartheid South Africa.
The study investigated the experiences of scholarship students from historically disadvantaged communities who attend elite secondary schools in South Africa.
Dr Wallace started her research in 2016, under the supervision of Emeritus Professor Pam Christie, and was able to submit her thesis at the beginning of 2020.
Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the university held a virtual graduation ceremony. Dr Wallace had a photo opportunity with Vice-Chancellor of UCT, Professor Mamokgethi Phakeng.
The staff at Wynberg were eager to share in the momentous occasion and held a special ‘graduation’ ceremony for her. “We are immensely proud of Dr Wallace's achievement,” said Tammy Duggan, the school’s marketing officer.
