Horizon Maths Competition

A total of 25 000 Western Cape learners in Grades 5, 6 and 7 participated in the annual Horizon Mathematics Competition.

Jan Karsten of Laerskool Jan van Riebeeck won gold with Ben Maree of Rondebosch Boys Preparatory clinching silver and Jean de Vries of Durbanville Primary School securing bronze.

The competition is a collaboration between the Western Cape Education Department, Star College and Horizon Math. It aimed at encouraging learners to have fun in the field of mathematics and allow those learners with a gift to shine through. Attractive prizes are offered to the top students to encourage an interest in mathematics.

Participants completed the first round online. The second round of the competition was held at Star College on Saturday, 22 May 2021.

Olivia Castleden of Somerset House finished in fourth position. Ibrahim Noordien of SACS Junior School won fifth place with David Yang of Panorama Primary School in 6th position, Horacio Butler of SACS Junior School in 7th place, Esa Hoosen of Rondebosch Boys Preparatory School in 8th, Noah Rassou of The Grove Primary in 9th and Muhsin Park of Rondebosch Boys Preparatory in 10th position.
