Global Teacher Prize Competition

1 April 2021

The Western Cape Education Department wishes to encourage our school communities to nominate exceptional teachers for the Global Teacher Prize (GTP).

The one million US dollar award, established by the Varkey Foundation, is presented annually to an exceptional teacher who has made an outstanding contribution to the teaching profession.

Applications for the GTP is now open and the closing date is 30 April 2021. Entrants will be assessed on teaching practices, how they innovate to address local challenges, achieve demonstrable learning outcomes, impact the community beyond the classroom, help children become global citizens, improve the teaching profession and gain recognition from external bodies.

The winner will be chosen by the prominent GTP Academy comprising head teachers, educational experts, commentators, journalists, public officials, technology entrepreneurs, company directors and scientists from around the world.

A rigorous set of criteria will be applied during the selection processes.

The Cape Teaching and Leadership Institute assisted prospective nominees by hosting an online information session on 26 March 2021 when Wendy Horne, a Top 50 GTP nominee, provided background to the GTP processes.

Another online session will be hosted on 31 March 2021 to assist with the completion of the forms for submission to the Varkey Foundation.
