From foreman to pursuing a teaching career

13 February 2020

Former school Caretaker, Abduragiem de Klerk has pursued a teaching career at Marine Primary School, following his graduation in 2019 at the age of 61.

De Klerk, who was a school Foreman, recently graduated with a Diploma in Education in 2019. This is an achievement which Boeta Giem, as he is affectionately known by his peers, never thought was possible due to his previous challenge of drug addiction, 16 years ago.

In 2013, at the age of 56, de Klerk decided to complete his matric which he accomplished. One of the educators at the school where he was the foreman encouraged his to enrol for a teaching course after noticing his ability of helping learners at the school understand concepts. De Klerk reminisces that “I used to help children understand fractions by cutting up apples and explaining it in a way that they could see what it was. People battle with fractions and they get lost after that. They need to see what it looks like in real life.”

De Klerk described his journey to obtaining his qualification as tough but got through by the grace of God.

The WCED is extremely proud of Boeta Giem and know that he will inspire many people especially our learners with his story.
