ELRC takes collaborative approach to school safety

23 November 2021

Parties to the Provincial Education Labour Relations Chamber in the Western Cape include the Western Cape Education Department and the following education sector unions: the South African Democratic Teachers Union (SADTU), National Professional Teachers’ Organisation of South Africa (NAPTOSA) and Suid-Afrikaanse Onderwysersunie (SAOU).

Parties to the Chamber believe that school safety is the responsibility of all stakeholders in education. Thus, a collaborative approach to school safety was taken by the Safety at Schools Task Team of the Chamber by initiating a Safety Advocacy Campaign throughout the province. To that effect, a poster was collectively developed around safety at schools with the following tagline:

#my responsibility, your responsibility, our responsibility
#my verantowoordelikheid, u verantwoordelikheid, ons verantwoordelikheid
#uxanduva lwam, uxanduva lwakho, uxanduva lwethy.

As part of the safety advocacy campaign and in view of the current COVID-19 pandemic and upcoming holidays it is crucial that advocacy be enhanced to keep our schools free from burglary and vandalism. It is with this in mind that the Safety at Schools Task Team developed a virtual Safety poster for distribution to all staff members of the WCED, School Governing Bodies, Educator Unions and parents.
