Comprehensive Sexuality Education Teacher training

13 February 2020

The Western Cape Education Department (WCED) conducted Comprehensive Sexuality Education (CSE) teacher training for Life Orientation (LO) teachers on 24 and 25 January 2020.

The training was held at two venues in Cape Town. Training at the one venue was confined to teachers from the Metro East and Metro North education districts because these are the two pilot districts for the implementation of the Scripted Lesson Plans in LO.

Teachers from the rest of the province were hosted at the second venue. A total of 228 teachers and 11 Subject Advisors attended the training.

The training was facilitated by the Education Development Centre (EDC), a partner of the Department of Basic Education (DBE) in CSE. The EDC team was led by national manager, Lindiwe Mothimane, and skilfully supported by Winile Mabokho and Ester Harmse.

Because of the hysteria around CSE in late last year, a number of teachers attended the training with a negative mindset. The Senior Curriculum Planner outlined clearly what CSE was about and addressed the ‘fake’ news that was spread on social media.

The response from the teachers after the training demonstrated a very positive attitude toward CSE. It is important to understand that CSE is not a new curriculum and it is not an add-on to the Life Orientation curriculum but rather an integral part of LO. CSE teacher training will continue throughout the year.
