Celebrating teaching excellence

19 September 2019

The annual provincial round of the National Teaching Awards (NTA) is well on its way. Cluster Winners and runners-up for these coveted awards were announced at Cluster Award Ceremonies across the province from the 12 – 14 September 2019.

The announcement of the winners and runners-up was preceded by intense Cluster Adjudication rounds, where nominees were required to do presentations as part of the Interviews to a well experienced and knowledgeable panel per cluster.

The Clusters are Metropole North & East, Metropole South & Central, Cape Winelands, Eden & Central Karoo, West Coast and Overberg. We are delighted with the increase of nominations for 2019. In 2018 we received 205 nominations and this has increased in 2019 to 247.

The NTA’s objective is to celebrate the extraordinary efforts of our excellent teachers and creates a platform to publicly show our appreciation for the hard and sterling work our teachers do under sometimes very difficult circumstances.

Amongst the prizes received at cluster level were:

  • All winners received an R 4 000 ICT voucher;
  • Runners-up received each a R 2 000 ICT voucher;
  • In addition, Capitec Foundation sponsored cash vouchers to the winners of the following categories, i.e. Excellence in Primary School Leadership and Secondary School Leadership each R 6 000, Excellence in Teaching Mathematics (GET)each R 6 000, Excellence in Technology Enhanced Teaching and Learning R 3 000.
  • Each provincial winner will each receive cash vouchers from Capitec Foundation, ICT vouchers and Laptops from the Western Cape Education Department (WCED).

The 49 NTA cluster winners across the 6 clusters will now compete for the Provincial honours of representing the WCED at the national round of the NTA.

A full list of all the cluster winners is attached.

The provincial Adjudication process will start on the 1st October 2019 and will be completed on the 11th October 2019, thereafter the Provincial Minister will announce the provincial winners at the provincial Awards Ceremony in the form of a banquet on the 08 November 2019. We want to encourage schools to watch this space and to visit our NTA Gallery on the WCED website and view highlights of the cluster processes.

The WCED is proud of our teachers that has participated in the 20th edition of the NTA and wish to congratulate all teachers who were nominated and who were ultimately rewarded with the accolades of best teacher in their respective category of entry and cluster.

WCED News would also like to acknowledge the creativity shown by ECKD for their “Enter to Learn Soup” starter, “IQMS full marks plate” main and their “T2P” trio dessert!
