The projects were judged by a panel of volunteer professionals.

The expo is considered one of the most prestigious competitions of its kind in South Africa. Learners are required to design and develop projects that address some of the world’s most pressing challenges using innovative and forward-thinking ideas.

Winning learners from the expo’s multiple regions in South Africa will have an opportunity to compete against one another, and some of those learners will have an opportunity to participate in the Young Scientists International Science Fair in Johannesburg next month.

Haroon Mahomed, Chief Director: Curriculum Management and Teacher Development, said the projects that were on display were products from critical and strategic thinkers, creative learners, problem solvers and innovative minds. “These are all the skills of the 21st century and are imperative to the future development of the human race.”

He congratulated all the participants and award winners and wished those selected to participate at the International Science Fair the best of luck as they compete against learners from 35 other regions in South Africa as well as visiting countries.
