Action packed launch event set the tone for holiday programme

10 July 2019

Start the way you mean to finish!

These wise words epitomised the recent Safe Schools Holiday Programme.

The launch event on Tuesday 18 June 2019 at Bernadino Heights Secondary School coincided with Youth day celebrations.

The event was attended by more than 1 000 learners, educators and district and head office staff.

The programme was designed to focus on the following values: teamwork, friendship, fun, cooperation, support, communication, competence, confidence, courage and respect.

The day started on an energetic note with cultural song, Rieldans and other dance items. The learners were also thrilled by a drill/marching band. Preston Jongbloed delivered a moving and challenging motivational talk.

The learners participated in two outdoor activities, Canvas Art Jamming and a Colour Run.

The Canvas Art Jamming entailed dividing learners into 36 groups. Each group received a blank canvas on which they had to paint a section of a mural after which three separate murals consisting of 12 canvasses were formed by putting the canvasses together like a puzzle.

The learners and educators had great fun participating in the Colour Run and they looked a colourful mess at the end of the session.

Learners were encouraged and challenged throughout the day to have the courage to become the change in their communities and to improve humanity.

The Western Cape Education Department received safety and security support from our partners, the Department of Community Safety and the City of Cape Town Law Enforcement Officers (School Resource Officers).
