300 000th learner at the Centre for Conservation Education

19 September 2019

The Centre for Conservation Education in Wynberg recently welcomed its 300 000th learner. Since 1989, the Centre has had a total of 300 000 school children participating in its environmental education programme. That is the equivalent of six full Newlands Rugby Stadiums!

The 300 000th learner in question was Kwamkelo April, a Grade 5 learner at the Dominican School for Deaf Children in Wynberg. Kwamkelo’s class came for a lesson on the Weather Station where they were introduced to a number of modern scientific weather recording instruments, and learnt how weather information is collected globally by both scientists and ordinary people - a nice introduction to citizen science.

Deaf children follow the same curriculum as other schools, and the Dominican School has been coming to the Centre for many years.

So congratulations to the centre- and Kwamkelo – who unknowingly became part of the centre’s own history when he entered the building!
