Dear Parents
MESSAGE FROM THE WESTERN CAPE EDUCATION DEPARTMENT
Our schools and officials have worked hard to ensure that we are well prepared to offer quality education to our children in 2011.
Our goals focus on improving the reading, writing and maths skills of every learner.
You can assist us greatly by ensuring that your children do the following:
- Attend school every day for the 200 days of the school year.
- Arrive at school before the school day begins and not leave before the end of the school day (late arrival disrupts teaching and learning).
- Discuss their academic progress with you so that you can provide support and encouragement (your school should provide you with an assessment programme for each subject at the beginning of the year and a formal progress report at the end of each quarter).
- Read, write and calculate every school day (check your children's exercise books and textbooks regularly to support their efforts and progress).
- Do homework every school day.
- Receive exercise books, reading books and textbooks in the first week of the school term.
You can also assist your children's learning during school holidays by encouraging them to practise maths and to read. The long holidays are from 10 December 2010 to 19 January 2011, and from 24 June to 18 July 2011.
Please visit your local library during the holidays or the WCED website at http://wced.wcape.gov.za for enjoyable ideas on how you can support your children's learning. The site includes recommended reading for children during holidays and leisure times.
The WCED wishes you a safe and happy holiday with your children.
Best wishes
