Ministerial Special Award

2015 Ministerial Special Awards

The WCED is aware that every year there are numerous candidates who achieve excellent academic results in the face of tremendous hardship, ill health and personal obstacles.

We are struck by the courage and fortitude displayed by many learners and families in achieving monumental goals.

This year Minister Schäfer wishes to recognize two learners who exemplify the exceptional courage and determination shown by many, many of whom are not known to us, in achieving their success.

The following Minister's Special Awards are presented:

For exceptional academic achievement and inspirational fortitude despite huge personal challenges. /

Andrew John Tucker, South African College School

  1. Our first candidate is a young man who has faced and overcome extreme challenges this past year.

At the beginning of his matric year he was diagnosed with a rare auto-immune disorder called Guillain-Barré syndrome which is a particularly debilitating disease where the body's immune system attacks parts of the peripheral nervous system. This lead him to miss almost six months of schooling last year - including the entire first term and parts of the second term.

Missing entire parts of the curriculum and battling with his health, which included losing the ability to write and even walk, this young man could have made the easy decision to postpone completing his matric by a year. However, he made the decision to persevere and with a positive attitude and numerous sessions of occupational and physical therapy, he set out to complete his matric, learning to write and even walk again.

With the support of friends and family, he caught up on the work he had missed by studying photocopied class notes. When he finally returned to school, he was still very weak physically and could only come to school for an hour or two at a time. By the time he wrote his June exams, he was still suffering from fatigue and muscle twitches, amongst other things.

Despite these incredible challenges, this young man not only managed to pass his matric, but achieved seven top-class distinctions, and the number one position in the country!

This is a truly inspirational story.

I am therefore delighted to present the first Special Minister's Award to a candidate from the South African College School (SACS):

Nkosingiphile Janine Mabuza, Hoërskool Bredasdorp
