Dunoon situation resolved.

Statement by Minister Debbie Schäfer, Minister of Education

Western Cape Education officials today met again with parent representatives in Du Noon to discuss the way forward with regards to the 113 verified learners needing to be placed in school.

It was agreed that the learners will be accommodated at the vacated mobile school as a temporary school, which will be managed by the Western Cape Education Department (WCED) Metro North Education District until the end of the 4^th term. A temporary governing body will be appointed.

The WCED has allocated 4 new teaching posts, and due process will now be followed in appointing the teachers for that school. By agreement, they will be contract positions until the end of December 2015.

It was agreed that furniture, desks, chairs and LTSM will be installed on Thursday, 27^th August and Friday, 28^th August this week.

The mobile buildings will be cleaned, with tuition due to start on Monday, 31 August 2015.

Learners will be assessed and evaluated, and suitable catch-up programmes and intensive support will be provided.

Our commitment is to provide the best quality education we possibly can to all learners in the Western Cape.

I would like to thank my officials for their perseverance, commitment and dedication to resolving this situation as quickly and efficiently as possible.

I am glad that we have been able to reach an amicable solution, and hope that we can now move forward in the best interests of our learners.
