Minister comments on Cloetesville bus accident.

Statement by Minister Debbie Schäfer, Minister of Education

A school bus carrying 57 learners from Cloetesville High School was involved in an accident on the R44 near Stellenbsoch this morning.

This morning I visited learners at Stellenbosch Hospital and I am relieved to hear that learners at the hospital have since been discharged.

We are hoping for a speedy recovery for the remainder of the learners and the driver involved.

According to the Health Department, three hospitals have treated or are caring for 36 learners.

They include 19 patients at Paarl Hospital. The hospital expects to discharge all of these learners today.

Stellenbosch Hospital has treated and discharged seven learners, and has admitted the driver for observation.

Tygerberg Hospital has admitted two learners to the trauma unit.

The Health Department has reported that they are in a stable condition.

The WCED has sent psychologists, social workers and counsellors to the hospitals and to Cloetesville High School to provide trauma counselling.

Our officials are working with the school to keep parents informed and to arrange necessary support.

The department will investigate the accident fully, in line with procedure.

We wish all those injured a speedy recovery.
