Ministerial special awards

The WCED is aware that every year there are numerous candidates who achieve excellent academic results in the face of tremendous hardship, ill health and personal obstacles.

We are struck by the courage and fortitude displayed by many learners and families in achieving monumental goals.

This year Minister Schäfer wishes to recognize two learners who exemplify the exceptional courage and determination shown by many, many of whom are not known to us, in achieving their success.
The following Minister's Special Awards are presented:

For exceptional academic achievement and inspirational fortitude despite huge personal challenges./Vir buitengewone akademiese prestasie en inspirerende vasberadenheid ten spyte van groot persoonlike uitdagings.

  1. Our first candidate is a young man who has faced and overcome extreme hardship. He has grown up and lives in an area where violence, gangsterism and drugs are prevalent and the death of a close friend nearly derailed him. He was arrested for possession of drugs and his father told him that he would never get anywhere or pass matric.

Despite these trying conditions, he worked hard and with determination, once he decided to go for it and passed the National Senior Certificate with 2 C and 5 D-symbols and obtained access to Bachelor's degree study opportunity at a Higher Education institution.

The first Special Minister's Award is presented to a candidate from Scottsdene Secondary School in Kraaifontein:

    Masolino Willemse
