Western Cape exceeds 38 000 NSC passes following the release of the supplementary examination results. One of the Western Cape's three main strategic objectives in education is to ensure that as many learners as possible have the opportunity to write and pass their National Senior Certificate. Some learners achieve a NSC pass through the October/November NSC examinations. Other learners, who have failed a maximum of two subjects or who were medically unfit during the examinations, are given a second chance to complete their NSC requirements by writing supplementary examinations. In February and March, this year, 6 469 candidates made use of the opportunity to re-write either one or two subjects in the NSC supplementary examinations. The results of these examinations have now been verified and I am delighted to announce that, together with the remarks for 2012 and the final 2012 NSC results, the Western Cape has exceeded 38 000 passes for the 2012 NSC examinations. In January 2013, it was announced that the Western Cape achieved a pass rate of 82.8%, with 36 992 passes. I am now proud to announce that in the 2012 Supplementary exams, 1 506 additional learners have passed the NSC examinations. This has increased the overall pass rate in the Western Cape to 86.2% with 38 671 passes. I would like to congratulate each of the candidates that have now achieved their NSC. I am pleased that they can now take advantage of additional education and training opportunities that are on offer to them. The Western Cape Government has repeatedly made it clear that the number of passes in the NSC examinations is arguably more important than the percentage pass rate as is it as a far more accurate reflection of the health and progress of the system. These results reflect that more learners are being retained within the system and are passing the NSC examinations than ever before. The individual results of candidates have been posted to them. Those candidates who have yet to receive their results via the post can also call the WCED certification/examinations division to obtain their results by phoning 021 467 2000. Those candidates that were not successful in the supplementary examinations will be able to register for the NSC examinations later this year. They will be afforded a special dispensation which will enable them to register late - the deadline will be the 31st of May 2013. The 2013 NSC examinations are to begin on the 23rd of October 2013.
