AWARDS TO SCHOOLS CATEGORY 1 - EXCELLENCE IN ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE In the category of academic excellence there are two sub-categories: excellence in academic achievement in the context within which the school operates and excellence according to a set of given criteria.Category 1a: Excellence in academic achievement in the social context within which the school operates In this category, awards are presented to eight schools where the academic performance in 2010 illustrates meritorious outcomes relative to the context within which the school operates and where there is consistency in the number of candidates (at least 90% of the previous 3 years). The 'context within which a school operates' is based on the quintile (1 - 3) and a pass rate of at least 75%. 'Meritorious outcomes' will be based on both number of candidates that wrote (minimum of 35) and the number of candidates who obtained the National Senior Certificate with access to Bachelors Degree.Each school will receive an award of R20 000 for the purchase of teaching and learning support material.

Category 2a: Most improved Public schools Awards will be made to ten school that have shown the greatest improvement in the numbers passing over the period 2008-2010 while maintaining or increasing enrolment levels of full-time candidates in Grade 12Each school will receive an award of R10 000 for the purchase of teaching and learning support material.
Each school will receive an award of R2 500 for the purchase of teaching and learning support material. Category 3a: Mathematics Excellence in Mathematics This is awarded to ONE school in the province that excelled by producing the highest number of passes at 30% and above in Mathematics. The school must have a minimum of 35 candidates who wrote Mathematics.
Improvement in Mathematics This is awarded to ONE school in the province that showed the greatest improvement in the numbers of candidates passing Mathematics at 30% and above in 2010 compared to 2009. The school must have a minimum of 35 candidates who wrote Mathematics in 2009 and 2010.
Category 3b: Physical Sciences Excellence in Physical Sciences This is awarded to ONE school in the province that excelled by producing the highest number of passes at 30% and above in Physical Sciences. The school must have a minimum of 35 candidates who wrote Physical Sciences.
Improvement in Physical Sciences This is awarded to TWO This is awarded to TWO schools in the province that showed the greatest improvement in the numbers of candidates passing Physical Sciences at 30% and above in 2010 compared to 2009. The school must have a minimum of 35 candidates who wrote Physical Sciences in and 2010. in the province that showed the greatest improvement in the numbers of candidates passing Physical Sciences at 30% and above in 2010 compared to 2009. Category 3c: Accounting Excellence in Accounting This is awarded to ONE school in the province that excelled by producing the highest number of passes at 30% and above in Accounting. The school must have a minimum of 35 candidates who wrote Accounting.
Improvement in Accounting This is awarded to ONE school in the province that showed the greatest improvement in the numbers of candidates passing Accounting at 30% and above in 2010 compared to 2009. The school must have a minimum of 35 candidates who wrote Accounting in 2009 and 2010.
Category 3d: Life Sciences Excellence in Life Sciences This is awarded to ONE school in the province that excelled by producing the highest number of passes at 30% and above in Life Sciences. The school must have a minimum of 35 candidates who wrote Life Sciences.
Improvement in Life Sciences This is awarded to ONE school in the province that showed the greatest improvement in the numbers of candidates passing Life Sciences at 30% and above in 2010 compared to 2009. The school must have a minimum of 35 candidates who wrote Life Sciences in 2009 and 2010
