Yesterday learners and educators returned to school for the start of the third term.

With their return, the Education Department of the Western Cape was able to establish how many schools had been affected by burglaries and vandalism over the long winter holiday.

Reports indicate that there was a drop in burglary and vandalism cases as compared to last years June/July holiday. Last year, there were 33 incidents reported to Safe Schools over this period, whereas this year, 30 cases were reported.

What is important to note is that this year’s holiday was two weeks longer then last year.

I am pleased that the estimated cost in damages also decreased by over 50%.

In 2009, the estimated cost of damages after the holiday period was R548 050, whereas in 2010, the estimated cost of damages amounts to R260 820.

While we are disappointed that there are elements in society who target our schools for their own personal gain, it is heartening that our sustained efforts in trying to combat this scourge are yielding positive results.

In most of the cases, the efforts by the perpetrators were foiled by school alarm systems, therefore causing only minor damages such as broken windows.
