We have now only three weeks to go before the end of the 2010 National Senior Certificate Grade 12 examinations.

Halfway through, the Western Cape Education Department is pleased with the process so far.

There has been a need to respond to factors beyond our control. For instance, in Khayelitsha last week, a small number of examination scripts were burnt in a Government vehicle after it was set alight during an educationally un-related protest. However,in all instances, the response by the Department has been fast and effective.

This is a huge logistical exercise and I would like to thank our well programmed, highly dedicated and committed team, for ensuring that each paper arrives at the correct examination centre on schedule and that there has not been any leakages or irregularities.

Although I know that many of our matriculants are extremely relieved to have completed writing some of the major subjects such as mathematics and economics, they must still remained focussed. They still have yet to write subjects such as Accounting, Life Sciences and Geography. All these subjects, historically, have low pass rates so we wish all our learners the best of luck in these, and all the other, examinations. It is essential that learners remain focussed and work consistently right through to the last minute of their last exam.

The WCED is still continuing to assist Grade 12 learners in their studies. Tutoring programmes are being held at specific schools in the province. For instance, in Metro Central, twelve High Schools will be participating in tutoring programmes in Accounting, Life Sciences and Geography right up until their examinations, with the last programme being held on the 29th of November - just before the final Geography examination.

If learners feel they need any further assistance, they are welcome to contact their district office to find out where they can find the necessary support.

I am also extremely grateful that we have received no reports of any road deaths this year. Last year, five our Grade 12 learners died in road related incidents and I again appeal to learners to continue to celebrate responsibly and to exercise extreme caution while driving.

I would also like to reiterate how proud I am of the Class of 2010 for their commitment and dedication this year despite the disruptions to the school year.

I am confident that they will continue in this spirit right up to the final examinations on the 3rd of December.
