Tips on learner enrolment

The Western Cape Education Department (WCED) is confident that the vast majority of learners who are entering Grades 1 or 8 next year, or who are changing schools, already have places in schools.

However, we know that some parents still have to register their children for school next year.

We urge these parents to do so as soon as possible, to avoid disappointment. Parents must formally apply at a school by filling in the relevant forms. Parents must receive an answer in writing. If a school places a child on a waiting list, it does not mean that the child has been denied enrolment - it's not a no answer.

Parents must ask the schools when they can receive a final reply. If the parent is told there is no space, they can formally appeal to the school governing body with a motivation.

If the SGB is adamant that the school is full, the parent may ask the district office for assistance. Districts have a good understanding of the schools in their areas. They can't guarantee placement in schools of choice, but will try to as helpful as possible.

Parents must provide the child's ID document, inoculation certificate and school transfer document, where relevant, when registering their children for school. Parents can also phone our toll-free number for assistance if necessary, on 0800-200-506.
