Kayamandi march

Teachers, learners and members of the school governing body of Kayamandi Primary School in Stellenbosch marched to the local office of the Cape Winelands Education District office this morning (23 June 2009).

The main issue was the location of the school, which is currently housed in mobile classrooms on unsuitable ground. The protesters demanded that the Western Cape Education Department (WCED) move the school to another site.

The Stellenbosch municipality has already zoned land for a site. District officials undertook to negotiate with the municipality to provide access to the site, so that so that the school could move by June next year. The protesters accepted this undertaking.

The WCED established Kayamandi Primary last year when it divided iKaya Primary, which had grown too large. Kayamandi has been housed temporarily in its current location, pending further negotiations with the local authorities.
