School flooding The Western Cape Education Department has taken various measures to address the issue of flooding at Bongolethu Primary School in Philippi. The department placed mobile classrooms on higher ground last year, so that the school could vacate dilapidated classrooms, and to use these for storage instead. Meanwhile, the province is building new classrooms on the higher ground for Bongolethu, designed to deal with the issue of flooding permanently. Contractors began work on new school buildings in January 2009. They had to move the mobile classrooms to make way for the construction work. They have raised the site to avoid flooding and are also upgrading the existing stormwater system. We will ask the contractor via the Department of Transport and Public Works to make it as easy as possible for learners and staff to reach their classrooms during this building period.
