WCED to start new Wallacedene school

Statement by Yousuf Gabru, MEC for Education in the Western Cape

The Western Cape Education Department (WCED) has decided to start a new school for learners who flocked to enrol at Enkululekweni Primary School in Wallacedene, Kraaifontein, in late January.

The WCED expected an increase of about 200 learners at the school this year, but in the end the number grew to more than 480.

The increase was unexpected. Reasons seem to include late arrivals, late registration and a movement of people to Wallacedene from informal settlements prone to flooding.

The school is popular in the area. Wallacedene also has a new housing development, which we have planned for.

The WCED plans to provide 16 mobile classrooms for a new school to accommodate the additional learners.

The department will appoint the principal, in line with standard practice when starting a new school, and will give priority to appointing teachers in excess of requirements at other schools where learner numbers have decreased.

The Metropole North Education District Office will form an interim school governing body, including representatives of the parent body, until the national election of SGBs later this year.

The learners will platoon at Enkululekweni until the mobile classrooms are in place. The department will give the projects its highest priority.
