MEC Grant shocked by deaths of another two learners

Statement by Donald Grant, MEC for Education in the Western Cape

Western Cape MEC Donald Grant is shocked by the news that another two learners have died in a car accident.

Roché Lingenfelder from Bellville High School, and Jeandré Burmeister from Bellville Technical High School, passed away early Tuesday morning.

"I am deeply saddened by the news. We have lost four of our learners this week, three of which were in matric, and one in Grade 9. It is extremely tragic,” he said.

"My sincere sympathies go out to the families and friends of those that have died. My thoughts are with you during this very difficult time. My prayers are also with the injured.”

Grant said that this week has certainly highlighted the serious dangers that exist on our roads.

“I am appealing to all our learners to exercise extreme caution while driving. Be vigilant of other vehicles and pedestrians, ensure that you buckle up and drive responsibly," he said.

"The WCED's Metro North and East Districts have arranged for counselors to assist the schools with trauma counseling and support. They have also arranged for additional counseling ahead of Friday's Life Sciences and Afrikaans papers."
