Unions meet new Head of Education

The new Head of Education in the Western Cape, Penny Vinjevold, and senior education managers met representatives of teacher unions in Cape Town yesterday (Tuesday, 3 November 2009).

Vinjevold joined the Western Cape Education Department (WCED) as Superintendent-General and head of the department on Monday (2 November 2009).

She said that she was keen to meet the unions as soon as possible because they represented teachers and as such, the unions would be the department's most important partners as they sought to improve the quality of education in the Western Cape.

"The meeting went well. We will agree to disagree from time to time, but we strongly agree on the need to support teachers as the primary drivers of education," she said.

Issues raised by the unions included consistent messages in good time; human resource management support; and school safety.

The unions represented included the South African Democratic Teachers' Union (SADTU), the Suid-Afrikaanseonderwysunie (SAOU) and the National Professional Teachers Organisation of South Africa (NAPTOSA).
