Health and Wellness Day for education staff The Western Cape Education Department (WCED) is hosting an Employee Health and Wellness Awareness Day for head office employees today (Thursday, 23 November 2006). This follows a very successful Awareness Day, which was hosted in Kuilsriver recently for employees in the WCED’s Metropole East district. The WCED’s Human Resource Development Directorate has planned similar days in other education districts. The special days form part of the WCED’s Employee Wellness Programme (EWP). The department introduced the programme in 2004 to support the wellness of employees. The department employs about 30 000 teachers and 8 000 public servants. The programme provides support and guidance to employees on health and life management issues. The EWP includes a confidential telephone counseling service that operates 24 hours a day. The programme encourages individuals to take responsibility for their own health and well-being, while providing guidance on issues such as stress management, life choices and situations needing guidance to ensure emotional stability. The Health and Wellness Awareness Days are focusing on both health and wellness issues. About 40 exhibitors are participating in today’s event at the Garden Commercial High School. Issues covered include healthy eating habits and exercise, blood glucose levels, cholesterol levels and eye care, among many others. Specialists will demonstrate relaxation techniques and exercises for dealing with stress and anxiety. The event will provide an opportunity for those wishing to know their HIV status to opt for counseling and testing. Those who will explore the services offered by the exhibitors will include Ron Swartz, the Head of Education in the Western Cape, who will formally open the special day at 11h00.
