Grassy Park school merger

We can confirm that Acacia and Montague’s Gift primary schools in Grassy Park will merge from the start of the 2007 school year.

The merger follows two years of consultation between the Metropole South Education Management and Development Centre (EMDC) of the Western Cape Education Department (WCED), governing bodies, staff and the local communities.

At the moment, both schools have relatively low learner numbers, and by merging, they will form a more viable primary school for all concerned. A total of 245 learners currently attend Acacia Primary, while 346 attend Montague’s Gift.

Stakeholders agreed that all the learners should attend Montague’s Gift, because of the dilapidated state of Acacia’s buildings.

The schools are situated about 500m from each other, which means that learners will not have to walk far to a new school. Many of the learners are already walking past Acacia to Montague’s Gift.

The two schools will have a combined enrolment of about 590 learners. By joining forces, they will be able to make the most of available resources.

The planned merger has already inspired greater confidence in the combined primary school in the local community as well as partners involved in supporting education in the area.

The Wynberg Rotary Club, for example, has obtained books worth R80 000 for the combined school from two schools in Norway.

The Metropole South EMDC is also looking at ways in which to upgrade the Montague’s Gift premises to improve the teaching and learning environment at the school.
