Safety march comment

Comment by Cameron Dugmore, MEC for Education in the Western cape.

The provincial government and religious leaders are planning to demonstrate against violence during a march in Cape Town on 25 November 2006.

The march, led by the Premier and key religious leaders, will mark the start of 16 days against violence in the Western Cape.

We want to ensure that schools also take part in that demonstration, especially those that are threatened by violence.

These include 106 schools where safety volunteers organised by Community Safety are providing special support. The safety volunteers will prepare banners for the demonstration.

We also want other schools to take part, especially safety committees at these schools and governing bodies. School safety is one of our key priorities in education, and we look forward to as many schools as possible taking part in this important event.
