SENIOR CERTIFICATE AWARDS 2005

SCHOOLS

Category 1: Excellence in achievement

Category 1a. Excellence of outcomes within the context in which the school operates

In this category awards to be made to schools where the academic performance over the three years 2003 to 2005 illustrates consistently meritorious outcomes relative to the contexts within which the school operates, while maintaining or increasing enrolment levels of full time candidates in Grade 12.

Award : R30,000 for purchase of learning and teaching resource material = R 180,000

  3. Zisukhanyo Secondary School – Weltevreden Valley
  4. Thandokhulu High School - Mowbray

Category 1b. Excellence on a set of criteria indicating high quality

In this category awards go to the top 10 schools in the province which have achieved excellence in academic results over the three years 2003 to 2005 on at least the following criteria:

  • an overall pass rate of at least 95% AND
  • a matriculation endorsement rate in excess of 70%
  • a merit pass rate of at least 45%
  • and a distinction rate of at least 15%

Award : R5,000 book voucher to support the promotion of literacy and school libraries = R50,000

Category 2: Improvement in Senior Certificate outcomes

Category 2a. Improvement in the Matriculation Endorsement rate

Awards will be made to those three state schools where the matriculation endorsement rate has consistently shown the greatest improvement over the three year period 2003 to 2005, while enrolment levels of full time candidates in Grade 12 is maintained or increased.

Award : R30,000 for purchase of learning and teaching resource material = R90,000

  1. Heidelberg Hoerskool – Heidelberg
  2. Wolseley Sekondere Skool – Wolseley
  3. Thembalethu High School- George

Category 2b. Improvement in Senior Certificate pass rate

Awards will be made to those three state schools where the Senior Certificate pass rate has consistently shown the greatest improvement over the three year period 2003 to 2005 while maintaining or increasing enrolment levels of full time candidates in Grade 12.

Award : R30,000 for purchase of learning and teaching resource material =R90,000

  2. Inkwenkwezi Secondary- Killarney
  3. Intsebenziswano Senior Secondary – Philippi

Category 3: Excellence and Improvement in Individual Subjects

Category 3a. Excellence in Mathematics HG

This is awarded to one state school in the province that excelled by producing the largest number of passes & highest % passes in Maths HG passes.

Award : R30,000 for purchase of learning and teaching resource material

  • Stellenberg High School – Bellville

Category 3b. Excellence in Mathematics HG & SG

This is awarded to one state school in the province that excelled by producing the largest number of passes & highest % passes in Maths HG & SG passes (excluding a winner in the above category).

Award : R30,000 for purchase of learning and teaching resource material

  • Outeniqua High School – Oudtshoorn

Category 3c. Excellence in Physical Science HG

This is awarded to one state school in the province that excelled by producing the largest number of passes & highest % passes in Physical Science HG.

Award : R30,000 for purchase of learning and teaching resource material

  • Parel Valley High School – Somerset West

Category 3d. Excellence in Physical Science HG & SG

This is awarded to one state school in the province that excelled by producing the largest number of passes in Physical Science HG & SG passes (excluding a winner in the above category).

Award : R30,000 for purchase of learning and teaching resource material

  • Bellville Technical High – Belville

S.G.’s Special Award for Most Improved Schools

Awarded for particular effort by teachers and learners in preparing for the Senior Certificate in 2005.

An Award of R30,000 per school for purchase of learning and teaching resource material = R90,000

Category 1

Category 2

Categories 3 to 7 are awards made to learners in the key areas of numeracy and literacy , i.e, Mathematics, Physical Science and the three official languages of the Western Cape – Afrikaans, English and isiXhosa. These awards are being made to the learners who attained the highest marks in each of these subjects on the higher grade. In 2 cases we have a tie.

Category 3. Excellence in Mathematics Higher Grade

Candidate who obtains the highest score in Mathematics Higher Grade.

  • Koch, Jaanri - H/S Bellville
  • Muller, Frances Sarah - Gynasium H/S Paarl

Category 4. Excellence in Physical Science Higher Grade

Candidate who obtains the highest score in Physical Science Higher Grade.

  • Wu, Min-Young - SACS

Category 5. Excellence in isiXhosa First Language Higher Grade

Candidate who obtains the highest score in isiXhosa First Language Higher Grade.

  • Siphendu, Anele - Intlanganiso S/S

Category 6. Excellence in English First Language Higher Grade

Candidate who obtains the highest score in English First Language Higher Grade.

  • Weinberg, Tara Mondesi - Westerford H/S

Category 7. Excellence in Afrikaans First Language Higher Grade

Candidate who obtains the highest score in Afrikaans First Language Higher Grade.

  • Mouton, Chanel - Hoërskool Durbanville
  • Wahl, Helene - Hoërskool D. F. Malan

Category 8. Learner who succeeded despite barriers to learning

These are learners who had to write specially adapted question papers – brailled papers and papers adapted for deaf learners – but despite all the difficulties succeeded in attaining excellent Senior Certificate results.

Category 9. Achievement by a Life–long Learner in the Senior Certificate in 2005

These are learners, one full-time learner and one part-time learner who due to circumstances had to leave school early and therefore did not get an opportunity to write the Senior Certificate examination. However, they still had dreams of achieving a Senior Certificate and, in adulthood, they have shown that it is still possible to achieve success.

  • Full-time – 33 yrs : Gretha De Villiers - Rosebank House Damelin
  • Part-time – 65 yrs : Nomakhaya Phymia Tolashe – St Francis Adult Education Centre
