New primary school in Strand

The provincial government has completed 28 new mobile classrooms to accommodate about 1 000 learners attending Silukhanyo Primary School in the Strand.

The school has shared premises with A C J Phakade Primary School until now, pending the completion of the new school.

The two schools shared the same premises because a shortage of school accommodation in the area, which is experiencing rapid population growth. The new school will come as a welcome relief for both school communities.

Schools normally share premises by making the buildings available to one school in the morning and the other in the afternoon.

In this case, the arrangement was different, in that the Foundation Phase learners (Grades 1 to 3) at both schools used the premises in the morning, while followed by senior learners once the Foundation Phase learners had left for the day.

Negotiations over the sale of the land on which the classrooms have been built has delayed the project to some extent. These negotiations have not yet been completed. Nevertheless, the owner of the land consented to the construction of the classrooms.

The Metropole East Education Management and Development Centre (EMDC) of the Western Cape Education Department (WCED) is currently arranging transport to facilitate the move. The EMDC expects that the learners will be in the new classrooms by 1 June 2005.
