Statement by the Western Cape MEC for Education, Cameron Dugmore

WESTERN CAPE Education MEC Cameron Dugmore this morning welcomed the settlement in the racism case between two families, involving two high school girls.

Criminal charges against a Table View mother, her 17-year-old daughter and the girl's boyfriend were withdrawn because of a conviction and sentence handed to them by the Blue Downs Equality Court earlier.

They were to appear in the Goodwood Magistrates Court on charges of assault and crimen injuria. The assault and racial remarks on fellow pupil Nosipho Mkhize happened last year outside of the premises of the Edgemead High School.

Said Dugmore: "This brings a satisfactory ending to a traumatic saga involving two school children.

"Racism can never be tolerated and no school chiId should be subjected to this kind of emotional trauma.

"Fortunately, wisdom has prevailed. Justice has run its course, and I am happy that the Mkhize family has supported the path of restorative justice, thus settling the matter and continuing with their lives. It is important for Nosipho to concentrate fully on her education.

"The Ferreira family displayed courage and maturity in admitting guilt and apologising. Like Nosipho, their daughter must also be occupied with her schoolbooks instead of being in courts.

"I wish to thank Human Rights Commissioner Ashraf Mohamed, Education Head Ron Swartz and other officials for their positive roles and leadership.

"We are determined to stamp out racism wherever it rears its head. This includes subtle practices - ranging from admission policies, which in effect reduces the number of African and Coloured learners from certain schools; lack of representivity in teaching staff; unwillingness of schools to compete against others in sporting and cultural activities - these are all challenges we will confront head on.

"In line with our government's Ikhapa Elihlumayo strategy, the education department has designed a racial integration strategy that deals with building tolerance and promoting diversity in educational institutions.

"The plan includes preventative and interventionist measures, as well as monitoring and support. The goal is to create an environment conducive to a culture of teaching and learning.

"We will continue with these kinds of initiatives to truly build a home for all in this province."
