1. This year, the Western Cape Education Department (WCED) will again celebrate the achievements of our learners in the field of Visual Art with the second WCED Visual Art Exhibition being held in each of the eight education districts. The celebration will culminate with the provincial exhibition taking place on 15 September 2018 at the PJ Olivier Art Centre in Stellenbosch.

2. All Grades R to 9 learners from all WCED schools are invited to participate in this event.

3. The purpose of the art celebration is to promote learners' creativity and ability to interpret any one of the suggested themes into a visual art work.

4. As Visual Art forms part of the Creative Arts Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statement (CAPS), teachers may use two-dimensional (2D) or three-dimensional (3D) art works created for this celebration as a Formal Assessment Task (FAT).

5. Workshops will be presented in all eight districts with the aim to support teachers with the preparation and execution of the exhibition.

6. Kindly note the following guidelines for participation:

  • The competition is open to all leaners in the GET Band, from Grades R to 9, including learners in special needs schools.
  • Learners may submit 2D or 3D art works.
  • Learners are free to choose any wet and/or dry medium, including but not limited to pencils, pens, watercolours, temperas, acrylics, crayons, pastels or ink, found material, clay, wood, paper, etc.
  • Each learner may submit only one entry.
  • All submissions must be made by an individual learner. Group submissions are not permitted.
  • All art works must be original work by the learner and may not infringe on any copyright; for instance, drawing a character from a clip art image or cartoon, including Manga, is not considered an original work.
  • Digitally created art work will not be accepted.
  • The size of the 2D entry should not be smaller than an A5 page and not bigger than an A2 page.
  • The 3D art work must be of a size that could be transported in a standard car.
  • Learners must also write a note about their art work, describing or explaining how they interpreted the selected theme.
  • This written note that accompanies the art work could be in the form of a paragraph, story, poem or separate words, etc. and can range from one word to a maximum of 100 words.
  • Each art work must be mounted on white mounting board or white card board.
  • The learner's name, surname, grade and school must be typed (font: Arial, font size: 11) and pasted with a clear glue stick on the back of the art work (please do not staple it).
