1. According to the Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statement (CAPS) for Languages in the Senior Phase (Grades 7–9), learners must undertake the "formal study of literary texts" including short stories, novels, poetry and drama.
2. The final lists of recommended books for Grades 7 to 9 Literature Study for 2019 are enclosed.
3. Schools are advised to consult Institutional Resource Support Minute: 0005/2013, dated 23 April 2013, when planning to use the attached 2019 final literature lists for the purchase of literature.
4. Schools should note that the purpose of these lists is to help Grades 7 to 9 language teachers with the selection of literary texts. Many texts include questions, applications and notes to support learners. There is support available on the internet for some of the titles at http://education.slims.gov.za/desktop/desktopewc.
5. Principals are kindly requested to bring this minute to the attention of all the teachers concerned.
