The Department of Basic Education (DBE) issued Circular S14 of 2017 (attached as Annexure A), pertaining to the prescribed literature texts for study in Grade 12 for all official languages at Home, First and Second Additional levels for the examinations to be written in October/November 2018 and May/June 2019. |
2. |
In 2017, the Department of Basic Education (DBE) introduced new setworks as per the literature catalogue released in 2015. Due to the absence of material for all genres and all languages, the DBE, through Circular E39 of 2016, outlined the implementation process to be followed towards the completion of a final catalogue in 2017. |
3. |
It was envisaged that the process of screening new literature material would be completed and a completed set of new literature would be implemented from 2018 in all official languages. However, despite the various screening processes undertaken, some gaps persist. |
4. |
In light of the above, the DBE hereby directs that the status quo, as outlined in Circular E39 of 2016 (attached as Annexure B), be maintained. |
5. |
The DBE will not be prescribing new literature texts for 2018 for the National Senior Certificate (NSC) examinations in October/November 2018 and May/June 2019. It is envisaged that a final catalogue will be issued in 2018, for implementation in 2019. |
6. |
This arrangement will be applicable to learners writing the NSC examinations in October/November 2018 and those writing the Senior Certificate examinations in May/June 2019. |
7. |
Schools are required to continue using the prescribed literature texts as stipulated in Circular E39 of 2016. |
8. |
Please bring the content of this minute to the attention of all concerned. |
