1. The Department of Basic Education (DBE) issued Circular E32 of 2017 (attached as Annexure A), pertaining to the prescribed literature texts for study for all official languages at Home, First and Second Additional levels for the Senior Certificate (SC) examinations to be written in May/June 2018.
2. Circular E32 of 2017 follows on Circular E35 of 2017, which states that the May/June 2018 SC literature question papers for all languages will be based on new prescribed literature.
3. However, the DBE has established that not all candidates who will write the May/June 2018 SC examinations will be ready to write literature question papers based on the new prescribed literature.
4. In light of the above, the DBE has taken a decision to set the May/June 2018 SC examination literature question papers for Home Language, First and Second Additional Language levels on the old prescribed literature, as listed in Circular E27 of 2014, as well as the new prescribed literature, as listed in Circular E35 of 2017.
5. The literature question papers for all official languages, at Home Language, First and Second Additional language levels, will allow candidates to attempt questions on the prescribed literature listed in both the circulars stated in paragraph 4, which cover both the old and the new prescribed literature.
6. This concession will only be applicable to the May/June 2018 SC examinations.
7. For ease of reference, Circular E27 of 2014 and Circular E35 of 2017, containing the old and the new prescribed lists, are attached as Annexure B and C respectively.
8. Please bring the content of this minute to the attention of all concerned.
