1. This minute must be read in conjunction with the Regulations pertaining to the National Curriculum Statement Grades R–12, the Regulations pertaining to the Conduct, Administration and Management of the National Senior Certificate examination and the Policy pertaining to the Programme and Promotion Requirements of the National Curriculum Statement Grades R–12 as amended in the Government Gazette, Vol. 618 No. 40472 of 02 December 2016 and Assessment Management Minute 0017/2017, dated 10 October 2017.

2. Multiple Examination Opportunity for progressed Grade 12 learners
2.1 Only 46% of the learners who chose the Multiple Examination Opportunity (MEO) option in 2017, actually wrote the May/June 2018 examinations.
2.2 A greater commitment is required from schools to support and encourage their MEO learners in their preparation for the May/June examination.
2.3 The MEO option gives learners who have been progressed from Grade 11 to Grade 12, the choice to write less than the six subject package in the November 2018 examination and write the remaining subjects in the June 2019 examination.
2.4 The performance of progressed learners must be monitored in the Grade 12 year, and in consultation with the parents/guardians, the learners will be allowed to write the examination in four subjects (including Life Orientation) in 2018 and the remaining subjects in the June 2019 examination.
2.5 In order to ensure uniformity in the application of the MEO option, a learner selecting this option must comply with all of the following criteria:

The learner must:

  1. have been progressed from Grade 11 to Grade 12;
  2. have completed all his/her School-based Assessment (SBA) requirements in all seven subjects in Grade 12;
  3. have attended school on a regular basis (absenteeism in excess of 20 teaching days, without a valid reason);
  4. have written the September 2018 examinations in all subjects; and
  5. have failed a minimum of three subjects in the September 2018 examinations.
2.6 Principals must ensure that the parent/guardian of the learner who qualifies for the MEO option is informed in writing on the attached Annexure A. The parent/guardian must indicate whether they accept or do not accept the recommendation. The school must keep the documentation should evidence be requested by the district office or Head Office.
2.7 The identification of the MEO learners must be done on CEMIS by 17 October 2018 and only accepted recommendations may be recorded. Please follow all the procedures as indicated in Annexure B.

3. Please note that the MEO option is only applicable to learners who progressed from Grade 11 to Grade 12.

4. You are kindly requested to bring the contents of the minute to the attention of all Grade 12 teachers, learners and parents/guardians at your school.
