| IMPLEMENTATION OF THE INCREMENTAL INTRODUCTION OF AFRICAN LANGUAGES (IIAL) PROGRAMME IN 2018 |

This minute serves as a follow up to Curriculum Minute 0012/2017, issued on 12 July 2017, wherein schools that do not currently offer Xhosa Second Additional Language in the Foundation Phase (FP) and schools that currently offer Xhosa as an extramural subject were invited to voluntarily implement the IIAL programme in Grade 1 from 2018 by using their existing English/Afrikaans teachers, supported by detailed and clear digital learning and teaching support material (LTSM). |

The Western Cape Education Department (WCED) is pleased to note that approximately 236 schools responded to the above invitation, attended the IIAL Imbizos meetings and indicated commitment to this programme from Term 2 of 2018. The list of schools is attached as (Annexure A). |

The WCED is currently in the process of procuring digital LTSM to support the Grade 1 teachers as an additional resource to the Department of Basic Education Toolkits that will be supplied. |

In order to prepare Grade 1 teachers for implementation in Term 2 of 2018, the WCED will provide workshops before the start of Term 2. All Grade 1 teachers and FP departmental heads should attend the full workshop which comprises two full days and a two-hour cluster session. |

The district offices will notify the schools listed in (Annexure A) of the specific venue and programme details by the end of February 2018. |

Principals are kindly requested to complete the reply slip (Annexure B) indicating the details of delegates. The information must be completed and returned to the relevant district FP coordinator by 26 January 2018. |
