1. The Western Cape Education Department (WCED) is offering lessons which are broadcast via an interactive telematics platform (lessons beamed via satellite technology) during the period February–November 2017.

2. Over the past few years these lessons primarily targeted Grade 12 learners and hence a valuable and extensive database has been established for some subjects covering Grade 12 content.

3. The focus for 2017 will be on Grade 10 and 11 see paragraph 7 below.

4. The broadcasts in 2017 will however include Grade 12 content for certain subjects, viz. English Home Language (HL), English First Additional Language (FAL), Afrikaans Home Language (HL) and History.

5. In addition professional development sessions will be offered for English and Afrikaans language teachers.

6. Since the timetable includes a number of subjects and different grades it is important that teachers and learners follow the timetable very carefully.

7. The following subjects will be offered:

  • English FAL (Grade 12)
  • English HL (Grade 12)
  • Physical Sciences (Grade 10 & 11)
  • Accounting (Grade 10 & 11)
  • Geography (Grade 10 & 11)
  • Afrikaans HL (Grade 12)
  • History (Grade 12)
  • Life Sciences (Grade 11)
  • Business Studies (Grade 10 & 11)
  • Mathematics (Grade 10 & 11)
8. The attached Annexure A provides the timetable of lessons and topics.

9. The topics of the lessons will be printed in the learner booklets which will be provided to each learner in each of the seven subjects. Principals must enquire from the FET coordinator in their district if the Grade 11 booklets are not delivered to their schools by Wednesday, 01 February 2017. The booklets for Grades 10 and 12 will be delivered later in the first term.

10. The presenters are lead teachers chosen for their expertise in their subjects.

11. Since lessons are conducted during the week after school hours, it is important that principals discuss arrangements with the parents of the learners and their governing bodies.

12. Learner attendance will be regularly monitored by Head Office and district officials.

13. Principals will be expected to report quarterly on the attendance of learners, as well as successes or difficulties experienced with the programme.

14. In 2016 a pilot project was conducted in ten schools where lessons were beamed via live streaming. This was made possible by the broadband internet service in WCED schools. Schools who do not have satellite technology but have access to the broadband internet service are encouraged to take advantage of this free and excellent tutoring programme. These broadcasts and associated materials may be accessed via http://wced.school.za/documents/Telematics/telematics.html. Schools who wish to access the live streaming lessons must register by completing the google form at https://goo.gl/forms/027fKIZJRltwlUoq1 by 23 January 2017.

15. Should you have any queries about this initiative, please feel free to contact Dr G Schreuder on tel. no. 021 467 2567 or via email to Glynis.Schreuder@westerncape.gov.za.

16. Candidates writing the National Senior Certificate Supplementary Examinations can purchase support lessons on DVD at a nominal price from the WCED by calling Edumedia on tel. no. 021 689 9536. See catalogue attached as Annexure B.

17. Principals are requested to bring the contents of this minute to the attention of the relevant staff, Grades 10, 11 and 12 learners and their parents or guardians.
