1. According to the Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statement (CAPS) for Languages in the Senior Phase (Grades 7-9), learners must undertake "formal study of literary texts" including short stories, novels, poetry and drama.
2. The final lists of recommended books for Grades 7 to 9 Literature Study for 2017 are enclosed.
3. The lists have been compiled for the purpose of reducing the need to purchase new books, but provision has also been made for the introduction of new titles.
4. The Prescribed Book Committees have considered all recommendations and comments and amendments have been made to the provincial lists.
5. Schools are therefore advised to consult the WCED Institutional Learning Support Minute: 0005/2013 when planning to use the attached 2017 final literature lists for the purchase of literature.
6. Schools should note that the purpose of this list is to help Grades 7 to 9 language teachers with the selection of literary texts. Many texts include questions, applications and notes to support learners. For some titles there is support available on the internet.
7. The study of a variety of genres including poetry, novels, short stories and drama will provide a basis for literary analysis at FET level. The inclusion of essays in isiXhosa aims to model and thus support appropriate writing skills.
