1. The Department of Basic Education (DBE) has taken a deliberate step to ensure that physical education constitutes an integral component of the whole experience of learning. Through the Curriculum Assessment Policy Statement, learners have access to physical education as a component of the Life Orientation Curriculum. This contributes to the Integrated School Sport Programme, which is the pillar and bedrock of sport in the country.
2. Physical Education Month has been earmarked as an advocacy and mobilisation programme around the implementation of physical education to run from 06 April to 10 May 2016. The programme aims to provide a platform through which the status of physical education could be elevated in South Africa. In observing and celebrating Physical Education Month, all schools in the Further Education and Training Band will be encouraged to participate in curriculum-orientated physical education activities culminating in Physical Education Day on 10 May 2016.
3. On 10 May 2016, starting at 08:00, in celebrating Physical Education Day, the DBE in collaboration with the Physical Education Institute of South Africa and stakeholders invites schools to participate in a two-minute star jumping activity. This is an attempt to set a new world record for "the most people star jumping simultaneously at multiple venues for two consecutive minutes".
4. Schools will be required to synchronise their time in order to meet the challenge and to record themselves accordingly.
5. The recording and evaluation of the world record will take place under the auspices of the world record personnel.
6. Schools participating will be monitored by the district Subject Advisers of the Western Cape Education Department.
7. Principals are requested to bring the contents of this minute to the attention of all Life Orientation educators.
