1. The Minister of Basic Education has promulgated amendments to policy and regulations pertaining to the National Curriculum Statement Grades R to 12 and the Conduct, Administration and Management of the National Senior Certificate (NSC) examination, stipulating that the offering of Mathematics with Accounting or Physical Sciences was compulsory as from 2016 in Grade 10.

2. The Department of Basic Education (DBE) has, however, deferred the implementation date for the phasing in of these amendments.

3. The new implementation dates for the compulsory offering of Mathematics with Accounting or Physical Sciences are as follows:

  • Grade 10 in 2017;
  • Grade 11 in 2018; and
  • Grade 12 in 2019.
4. Schools that have already implemented the amendments should not alter their subject combinations. The extension is granted to accommodate schools that were not able to implement the amendments in 2016.

5. Principals are kindly requested to bring this information to the attention of the current Grades 9 and 10 learners and teachers.
