1. The Cape Teaching and Leadership Institute (CTLI) invites Grades R to 7 Mathematics teachers to participate in the Mathematics Solutions Conference either as presenters or as participants.

2. Purpose

The purpose of this Mathematics Conference is to provide examples of ways in which Mathematics can be effectively taught.

3. Date, time and venue

The conference will take place on Tuesday, 04 October 2016, from 08:00 to 15:00, and on Wednesday, 05 October 2016, from 08:00 to 13:00, at the Cape Teaching and Leadership Institute, Nooiensfontein Road, Kuils River.

4. Information for presenters
4.1 Parties interested in presenting a Mathematics lesson, a paper on Mathematics teaching or a "best classroom practice" workshop at the conference should be guided by the following:

  • The lesson or paper or "How I teach" workshop must be based on the national Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statement (CAPS) for Grades R to 12.

  • The lesson should teach an aspect of the Mathematics syllabus for a particular grade.

  • Conference participants should be involved in the lesson or workshop, that is, it must be presented in an interactive way.

  • The duration should be no more than 60 minutes. Allow 5 to 10 minutes for group discussions or questions.

  • Venues will have portable tables and chairs, a data projector, an overhead projector, interactive whiteboard devices (Mimio and Compujector), a document viewer (AVER visualiser) and a flipchart stand with paper. Venue furniture will be arranged in such a way that it facilitates group presentations for a maximum of 30 participants per venue.

  • The CTLI also has WiFi access available in the training venues.

  • All worksheets for the conference will be collated and printed in book form. This means that presenters will not need to bring additional copies of printed material, unless participants are required to cut or fold pages of worksheets.

  • Electronic or hard copies must therefore be forwarded or handed to the programme coordinator before or on 16 September 2016.
4.2 The conference is also looking for presenters who can share "best practices" for using Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in the teaching and learning of Mathematics in the classroom.
4.3 If you are interested in presenting an item at the conference, please complete the attached Annexure A and return it to Ms N Fouche at fax number 086 443 6276 or email address Natasha.Fouche@westerncape.gov.za by 19 August 2016.

5. Information for participants
5.1 Teachers who would like to attend the conference as participants are requested to fill in their details on the enrolment form, attached as Annexure B.
5.2 The completed Annexure B must be returned to Ms Gaynor Matthews at email address Gaynore.Matthews@westerncape.gov.za or fax number(s) 086 601 4232 or 021 900 5013 or 021 900 5027 by Friday, 02 September 2016.
5.3 Enrolment will close once the first 300 applications have been received by the CTLI.
5.4 The conference programme will include a plenary and parallel sessions.

6. Logistics

Participants or presenters from the rural districts travelling further than 120 km per return trip may stay overnight in the Cape Teaching and Leadership Institute’s hostel on Monday, 03 October and Tuesday, 04 October 2016, at the WCED’s expense. Hostel-goers may book into the hostels from 13:00 to 16:00 on Monday, 03 October.

7. The WCED hopes that this conference will be enriching for all Mathematics teachers who attend it.
